Two ordinary Kachin civilians were randomly summoned and severely beaten by Burmese Army (BA) soldiers last week.
Lashi Seng Li of Nawng Mi village was on his way to get firewood in the forest when he was arrested, beaten, and stabbed by BA soldiers near Nawng Mi village in Hpakant township on March 14. BA soldiers reportedly stabbed Seng Li with a spear for 3 times and beat him in the head. Seng Li was later handed over to villagers giving 50,000 kyats (about $33) for treatment.
In northern Shan state, BA soldiers interrogated and beaten a passersby in front of a morgue in Taryarkone quarter in Kutkai on March 12 at around 5:30 pm. BA soldiers, who were reportedly angered by some fatal casualties following a battle with KIA troops at Nawng Hkyu Bum in Dima area on previous day, stopped Hpaugun Tang Mai and beaten him for several times. Tang Mai was on the phone with his wife in front of Kutkai mortuary when the soldiers spotted him. Tang Mai was blindfolded, hands tied behind the back and severely beaten by the BA soldiers near a police station in Taryarkone quarter in Kutkai. He was later taken to Kutkai General Hospital for treatment for kidney injuries.
