Heavy Rains Caused Flooding in Kachin State

Heavy rain caused flooding in several towns across Kachin State this week. Flooding has blocked the road between Kamai and Chyahkrau in western Kachin State. Old Seng Tawng town has been flooded since last Thursday due to a waterway blockage of Gwi Hka river. Huge landslide by jade mining operations in Hpakant area blocked the Gwi Hka river and its waterway. About 400 people from 95 households have been evacuated after the floods in Old Seng Tawng.

Severe flooding has also been reported in Nammaw, Seng Awng, Mashi Kahtawng and other villages in Hpakant area, Namti Township, and along Madalay-Myitkyina railroad in Kachin State.

Most flood victims have been internally displaced and authorities are failing to assist them. Currently much needed aid came from local faith and civil organizations, and individuals.
