Battles Rage in Kachin and Shan State as Peace Talks Stumble

A series of fierce battles took place in Kachin and northern Shan State between allied ethnic armies and Burmese army as the KIO-Burmese government delegations met face to face for talks in Myitkyina.

KIA’s 17th Battalion troops on Thursday fought against an unknown Burmese army unit near Hu Bu Manau Bum hill in northeastern Shan State at around 9 am, said a KIA source.

A combined force of KIA’s 12th and 27th Battalion troops engaged in a series of battles against Burmese army’s 301st Light Infantry Regiment (LIR) troops in Mansi Township in southern Kachin State on May 14. A KIA source in Mansi says the two sides first encountered at Nam Sa village at around 5:30 am and again at Sharaw La Hkyet in the afternoon.

On May 13, a battle took place between KIA’s 2nd Battalion troops and Burmese army’s 112nd LIR troops near Loi Lem in northern Shan State at 10 am.

Another battle took place on the same day between KIA’s 2nd Battalion troops and Burmese army’s 217th Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) troops at Man Htun village in Kutkai Township at around 8:30 am.

While exact casualty figures are not released by either side, local sources reported that they saw government troops carried away wounded soldiers on stretchers.

A TNLA source says a combined force of TNLA’s 223rd Battalion and MNDAA (Ko Kang) troops on Thursday battled against Burmese army’s 45th LIR troops near Nam Jarap village, located on Theinni-Kunlong road, at 9:15 am.

A combined force of TNLA’s 335th Battalion and MNDAA’s 3rd Battalion on Wednesday launched an attack on Burmese army’s 290th LIB base at Ta Mon Ye in Kutkai Township at around 11:15 pm, and incurred high casualties, reported the TNLA source.

News and Information Department of the PSLF/TNLA reported that several clashes took place on May 10-13 between ethnic allied force and Burmese Army.

A battle took place between TNLA’s 478th troops and Burmese army troops under 88th Light Infantry Division at Htet-kyet village in Namkham Township on May 13. Six government troops were killed and several others wounded in this battle.

A joint force of KIA’s 38th Battalion, TNLA’s 818th Battalion and MNDAA’s 17th Battalion fought against Burmese army’s 507th LIB and 568th LIB troops at a location between Mong Koe and Hpaunghsaing in Muse Township on May 10 at 2:30 pm. At least 7 government soldiers died in this battle against allied ethnic troops, reported TNLA’s Information Department.

Both KIO and Burmese government’s delegations reaffirmed their commitment to the previous agreement to establish a joint monitoring team during the one-day meeting in Myitkyina on May 13.

The meeting, which was attended by Ms. Mariann Hagen of UN, Mr. Wang Yingfan of China, NCCT & UNFC members, and other ethnic armed organizations, was shortened from two days to one day. NCCT members then held a separate meeting with Mr. Wang Yingfan on May 14. Ethnic leaders also met with Kachin public in Myitkyina’s Manau Compound on May 15.
