Burmese Army Provokes KIA with Artillery Fire, Civilians Maimed by Burmese Landmines

In Kachin State on February 20 in areas controlled by KIA’s 3rd Battalion troops under 5th Brigade, Burmese army troops from their Nwan Yang base reportedly fired two rounds of heavy artillery towards KIA positions between Wa Baw Bum and Wa Tang Hkyet approximately at 10:00 a.m., a KLN frontline source reported.

On the same day in KIA’s 253rd Battalion territory, Burmese army troops belonging to 381st Light Infantry Battalion(LIB) from their Sama Kawng outpost provoked KIA troops based at their Pang Lung outpost firing 10 machine gun rounds between 11:55 a.m.-12:15 p.m., and again firing light weapons towards KIA positions at around 5:25 p.m.

Meanwhile in northern Shan state on February 18 beginning at around 10:00 a.m., KIA’s 36th Battalion troops under 6th Brigade reportedly engaged Burmese army troops belonging to 99th Light Infantry Division(LID).

On February 19 approximately at 11:00 a.m. in KIA’s 36th Battalion area, Sann Aung (age 14) and Hpung Yu (age 12), sons of Mr. Soe Win and Mr.Hpung Kala respectively, stepped on a landmine by accident planted by Burmese army troops near their Munggu Byuhar Base. The badly wounded kids have been receiving treatment at the Munggu hospital, the KLN has learned.

Similarly on February 17 in Hkalen village, a local civilian named Mr. Sau Ta also got injured from stepping on a landmine planted by Burmese army troops belonging to 11th LID, locals told KLN.
