Ground Battles Continue to Rage in Shan and Kachin State

Fighting between Kachin Independence Army (KIA) troops and Burmese Army troops raged in northern Shan State and southern Kachin State, and a series of battles took place in Ta-ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) area and Shan State Army (SSA-South) area.

A combined force of KIA’s 9th Battalion troops and Kachin People’s Militia (MHH) troops engaged in a battle against an unknown Burmese Army unit at Nam Gut in Kutkai Township on Sept 18 at 8:45 am.

KIA source said Burmese Army troops fired several (60mm, 81mm, and 120mm) mortar rounds on KIA’s 36th Battalion positions at Loi Jung Bum and Bang Lum Bum, located between Mungpaw and Munggu in northern Shan State, on Sept 17 and 18. Loi Jung Bum, also known as Prayer Mountain, is historically important to the locals.

KIA’s 39th Battalion troops fought about 100 soldiers from an unknown Burmese Army Infantry unit at Loi Jung Bum on Sept 17 at 5:30 pm.

About 30 Burmese Army Infantry Battalions under Meiktila-based 99th Light Infantry Division, Theinni-based 16th Military Operations Command, Lashio-based North Eastern Command have been deployed in Monkoe area and stationed at 4 positions – Wing Seng, Tagawng Pa, Loi Dang and Hpu Htu Jai, to launch offensive operations against KIA frontline posts.

In southern Kachin State, KIA’s 27th Battalion troops encountered a combined force of Burmese Army troops from 86th LIB and 318th LIR at Laika Zup Ja village in Mansi Township on Sept 18 at 5:20 pm.

Tension rise between KIA’s 12th Battalion troops and a combine force of Burmese Army troops from 56th LIB and 601st LIR in Chyauk Dwi and Nbungli Pa area in Mansi Township as government soldiers threatened local residents to remain inside their own houses.

TNLA source said its 765th Battalion troops fought Burmese Army troops under 77th Light Infantry Division at Dabang village in Manton Township on Sept 19 at 11:20 am. The battle lasted for about an hour and no casualties have been reported from either side.
