51st LIB Troops Launched Attack on KIA’s Nam Hkyi Post

A KIA source said Burmese army’s 51st Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) troops on Monday fired several 60 mm mortar rounds on KIA’s Nam Hkyi Post in Hpakant Township. Lt. Col. Kyaw Aung led 51st LIB troops that initiated attack on KIA post, said the source.

KIA troops from 5th and 26th Battalions stationed at Nam Hkyi Post returned fire following the bombardment and the two sides engaged in a fierce battle. Casualty information is not available from either side.

Gant Gaw- based 51st LIB and two other battalions from Irrawaddy Division’s South Western Command (Na.Ta.Hka) headquartered in Pathein were deployed in Maw Lu, Maw Han and Nam Si Aung area during heavy fighting between KIA and Burmese army troops in last year. Burmese army troops from Irrawaddy Division have remained in Hpakant area despite fighting has decreased in the ground.
